About The Sugarsmith Candy Shop

Welcome to The Sugarsmith Candy Shop, where craftsmanship meets sweetness.

My name is Randy Haas, and I’m both a blacksmith and a candy maker. About fifteen years ago, my father gave me the opportunity to learn how to make Damascus steel, and I became fascinated with the process of creating intricate, patterned steel by hand. I fell in love with the precision, patience, and creativity that come from transforming raw materials into something truly special.

Years later, my wife showed me some videos of old-fashioned handmade candy being made. The same spark that drew me to steel making came alive again, and The Sugarsmith Candy Shop was born.

Surprisingly, steel and sugar have more in common than you might think. Both require exact timing, temperature, and technique to achieve perfect patterns and textures. Some of the methods I’ve honed over the years in blacksmithing even carry over beautifully into candy making.

Thanks to the incredible support of our local community and surrounding areas, my family and I have been able to grow this dream into something truly sweet. Every piece of candy we make is crafted in small batches in Marlette, Michigan, using traditional methods and high-quality ingredients.

We’re excited to share our candies with you. Whether it be our classic hard candies, brittles, chocolate-dipped treats, or sponge candy, it is all made by hand with care.

We invite you to experience the magic of The Sugarsmith Candy Shop, where craftsmanship and candy come together.

Proverbs 24:13-14

My son, eat honey, for it is good,
    and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste.
 Know that wisdom is such to your soul;
    if you find it, there will be a future,
    and your hope will not be cut off.
